Respect & Equality

Message from the Superintendent Dear Canutillo Community,

As we head into the three-day weekend, I want to mark the importance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday. Now more than ever, it is important for us to celebrate and commemorate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his vision for an America where opportunities are not limited but rather expanded to everyone regardless of their background.

Much is said about our country being in a post-racial phase and that discrimination and intolerance is no longer an issue. While it’s important to recognize that our people have come a long way since the days when Dr. King and his followers bravely fought for civil rights, it is equally important to note that we have a lot of work to do before we reach full harmony and acceptance for one another. The social climate in our country continues to deteriorate and we insist on finding ways to create irreconcilable differences among us. Whether racial, ethnic, socio-economic or even political, so many of us are intent on using these reasons to create intolerance and hate. Dr. King advocated for respect and equal access to the rights of being in America. That access doesn’t detract from one’s political or personal beliefs. Rather, it says that we recognize the right for each and everyone of us to lead our lives as we see fit without the fear of intolerance.

As you take Monday off to rest and recharge, I hope you take a second to reflect on the teachings of Dr. King and how five decades after his tragic death they remain relevant and true.

During your time off, I also want to encourage you to take a couple of minutes to help the District figure out its priorities when it comes to our facilities. As you know, the defeat of the bond election has left us with several issues and no funding. The District is now in the midst of figuring out how to address these issues.

But before we move forward, we want to know what the community feels is a priority for them. That’s why we have launched the Canutillo Growth Survey 2023. You can find the survey here: https://my.thoughtexchange.com/scroll/614680667/welcome.

The survey will help us determine what parents, students, staff and other stakeholders feel we should address first with the limited budget we have. So take a minute and help us understand what our most critical needs are.

Have a great three-day weekend, Canutillo. See you on Tuesday!
