Thirteen graduating seniors from Canutillo and Northwest Early College High Schools are getting generous support from local alumni and partners. Each graduate received $500-$1,000 from the Canutillo Alumni Foundation for Education (CAFÉ) and the Class of 1994. Since 2004, more than $126,000 has been raised by the group and awarded to about 166 students.

CAFÉ has partnered with the Paso del Norte Community Foundation to further their goals. In 2018, Canutillo Independent School District and the alumni group established an agency advised fund to help meet the needs of CAFÉ.

CISD Superintendent Dr. Pedro Galaviz says that he is proud to continue to further development with alumni and partners in the community.

“I’m happy that the fund is receiving growing support from generous alumni and community partners to increase the amount we are able to give every year,” Galaviz said. “We are now encouraging employees of the District to give easily and regularly through payroll deduction.”

In May, CAFÉ held its annual golf tournament at Painted Dunes Golf Course to raise funds for the scholarships and awarded the students at a reception before the regular school board meeting. During the scholarship reception, Luis Acosta, General Manager of Charlie Clark Nissan in El Paso, partnered with TFCU District Sales Manager Carlos Orozco to present unique gear for all the scholarship recipients. Each received a personalized backpack, school supplies, and an Amazon gift card to give them a head start.

“I am very delighted to be able to help the students in my own community for their next step in college,” Acosta said.

Tax-deductible, one-time, annual, and monthly gifts can now be made online by visiting https://pdnfoundation.org/give-to-a-fund/canutillo-alumni-education-foundation. This year, CAFÉ plans to promote a membership drive to encourage monthly giving through payroll deduction at Canutillo Independent School District. Supporters will receive a free CAFÉ gift with their annual or monthly contribution.
